Take a position

#

Your aircraft are bright on the scope. Each data block shows the callsign and its position: A for Approach, D for Departure, T for Tower and C for Center. It also shows altitude, speed and your assignments.

  1. Choose Approach and Departure under Where do you sit in the planner, and include the TRACON.
  2. On the Terminal scope, a flashing data block is a handoff waiting for you. Select the aircraft and choose Radar contact, or say its callsign and radar contact.
  3. Type instructions in the Say line or hold your talk key and speak. Start each transmission with the callsign.
  4. Use APP or DEP at the top of the scope to take a position from RadarWorks or give it back.

Arrivals

#

Bring arrivals down and vector them onto the final. Give the heading, the altitude to maintain until established, then the approach clearance. Hand the arrival to Tower once it is on the glideslope. If the runway is not ready, hold the aircraft at a fix and give an expect further clearance time.

Keep aircraft 3 miles or 1,000 feet apart. Beyond 40 miles, use 5 miles. The scope marks the final approach fix and the approach gate. Give the final turn and approach clearance so the aircraft joins the final course outside the gate and captures the glideslope from below.

Procedures: FAA Coded Instrument Flight Procedures. For simulation only, never for navigation.

What you can say2 examples
  • American 123, turn right heading 330, maintain 3000 until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 36 approach
  • American 123, hold northeast of ASPEN as published, expect further clearance 1530

Departures

#

Take each departure from Tower with radar contact. Climb it, turn it on course and hand it to Center before it reaches the edge of your airspace, 40 miles out or 10,000 feet. A departure goes to Center, not Tower.

Words RadarWorks understands

Use a callsign with your instruction. The Terminal scope understands these examples. Fixes must be available at your airport.

Open Training in the Hub and choose an Approach or Departure lesson. Traffic waits while you read each card. Repeat takes you back to the start of a step.
